“This movie presents a visualization of the star-forming region known as S106. This unique three-dimensional view illustrates and emphasizes that many of the objects contained within astronomical images are not at the same distance, but, in fact, spread across light-years of space. The Hubble image is augmented with additional field-of-view from the Subaru Infrared Telescope. The stars and the lobes of glowing gas from the Hubble/Subaru two-dimensional image have been separated and sculpted using both scientific knowledge and artistic license to create the depth in the movie. Of note, the relative distances between stars and the nebula have been greatly compressed.”

“This devastatingly beautiful image shows the birth pangs of a massive star. Called IRS 4 (for Infrared Source 4; it was first seen in IR images), it’s the really bright star just below center where the two blue lobes come together. It’s a bruiser, an O-type star with at least 15 times the Sun’s mass — 30 octillion tons! — and is a staggering 10,000 times as bright. It’s still in the process of forming, but it’s nearly there.

Located about 2000 light years away, IRS 4 is surrounded by an enormous cloud of gas and dust that may have a mass as high as 25,000 times the mass of the Sun. When the star first ignited, fusing hydrogen into helium in its core, the vast amount of energy it started pouring out lit up the cloud in the immediate vicinity around it. Most of the cloud is still dark and cannot be seen here, but everything within a few light years of the star is being illuminated, if not ionized, by the fierce ultraviolet light from the star.”

It would be amazing to own a Red MX camera. The resolution is so high that it easily rivals movies made with film, and even though it costs $25,000 USD, it is actually cheaper than using film for any production. Most directors are switching to using Red digital cameras, except for ones like Woody Allen, where they basically have enough clout to use whatever they want. Digital will always dominate in the future.

Arovane – “Cry Osaka Cry:”

Taking it back seven years to 2004 with this one from German producer Arovane aka Uwe Zahn. The song above was released on his record Lillies, which was inspired by a trip Zahn took to Japan. 2004 was the last year that Zahn released music and he went out with a bang. We wish we could hear more from Arovane, but for whatever reason, he decided to stop making music… or releasing it anyway.

Great cover of Elton John’s track. Goulding is quite multifaceted.

Oh, she also has the Midas touch.

Boards of Canada also made a hot remix of the “Midas Touch,” under the moniker “Hell Interface.”

Rido feat. Thomas Oliver – “Twisted:”

This track was just released as part of the mix Fabriclive 58: Goldie, just a wee four days ago. It’s the intro track for the mix. Even if you’re not so into drum and bass, you can still get into this song. You can buy the full mix now over at the Fabric Store on the Fabric London site.

Been fans of Deru for over five years now. This track and video are really good. Deru’s sound is different and experimental without going too far away from conventions. In other words, it works.

Kanye West – “Blame Game (Feat. John Legend):”

So upon closer listen to Mr. West’s My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy we noticed that he sampled the 2001 track “Avril 14th,” by Aphex Twin. Yeezy’s song is a hot jam, but it’s just sort of funny that he sampled a song that’s 10 years old to make it. We’ve got nothing against sampling, and really, Kanye did a good thing by adding high-pitched piano and a beat on top of the original melody by AFX, but the chuckle-factor comes from the fact that we were listening to “Avril 14th” 10 years ago, when it was first released. So, hearing it now is like “Ohh yeah, that’s right.” No doubt Kanye paid Aphex Twin royalties for sampling the song, but how many Kanye fans would really recognize where that sample came from? That’s the question. Oh, and Yeezy taught us.

Here’s a trailer for The Last Survivor. It’s an excellent documentary that has been out for a couple months that Keith Kenniff (aka Goldmund / Helios) did the soundtrack for. The documentary follows four different survivors of genocide in their quest to make sense of their experiences and move on. Soundtrack review is forthcoming.

The Roots – “Right On (feat. Joanna Newsom and STS:”

Dang. Remember when “Peach, Plum, Pear,” dropped on “The Milk-Eyed Mender,” record by Newsom back in March 2004? Good to see that she’s working with the roots now, even though some people thought she sounded off her rocker in the 2004 track (video below).

An original composition by Sepalcure will be featured in Darren Aronofsky’s forthcoming film, “Black Swan.” Sepalcure is an electronic music duo made up of Machinedrum — one of our favorite and frequently mentioned electronic musicians — as well as Praveen Sharma who is another seasoned electronic musician. So, we’re amped about hearing this soundtrack and think Natalie Portman is awesome(watch her performance in The Professional if you haven’t already) and are interested to see how she fares against her nemesis in the film: Mila Kunis.

At any rate, ballerinas are an interesting to us. One of our staff members went to high school directly across the street in Center City Philly from a dormitory full of ballerinas working for The Pennsylvania Ballet. So, we could discuss at length some of the drama, emotional hell and competitive struggles that we know dancers can go through in their careers, but we’ll spare you the details. Of course, Black Swan is dramatized for entertainment value, but we’re always up for a new psychological thriller if the subject is right. This time, the subject is definitely right. Music and audio are such a huge part of any film for us, and when an artist we know makes it onto a film score, well that’s always just luscious for the entertainment experience.

This movie is great for first dates. We promise.

You have to give it up for modern technology and what we’re able to do with something like a simple voicemail message and someone’s Facebook account. This video is a joke, so don’t get all worried on us.

Vampire Weekend – “I Think UR a Contra:”

Can’t say that we’re into boxing since we don’t ever watch it. The closest we came to boxing is that most of us are from the Nintendo generation, so we grew up with the awesome game Mike Tyson’s Punch-Out!!.

It’s no secret that Mike Tyson was a boxing legend, but in large part, the reason we love this video is because the editor could not have chosen better background music for such brute force than the soundtrack theme song from the movie Requiem for a Dream.

The Summer has been a non-starter here in Scotland. It hit me pretty hard the other day when my vitamin D deficient face looked out the window for another overcast day in the lab. But it’s kinda beautiful in its own way and it adds extra meaning to songs that can normally coast over you. Me & Fine Art made three tapes this month – one for Dazed, one for Nalden and this one here was just sorta labour of love with some really weird shit ( verging from new Hudson Mo to modern classical, fusion, 90s rnb & soul ) to bring some balance and new meaning to a Summer of dreich ( Scottish for shitty weather ).
