We are happy to present forthcoming HEADLINE additions to the soon approaching and much anticipated Lightning in a Bottle Music and Arts Festival 2010, presented by The Do Lab, which will occur Memorial Day weekend (May 28-31) at the beautiful Oak Canyon Ranch in Irvine, CA.

On the heels of their upcoming release “Drink the Sea”, and after a stand-out Coachella performance, The Glitch Mob will be performing along with the indie sensation Nico Vega and our cherished brothers and sisters, the Lucent Dossier Experience.

We would like to offer our sincerest thanks to all of the amazing submissions on the “Mixtape to Make the Line-up” contest. Not surprisingly our three top finalists were all unbelievable female DJ’s… The submissions have all been great and it was quite a task picking the “Grand Producer” to perform at this years LIB, but alas we have chosen and her name is KRYSTEE!

Other musical additions include Heyoka, Sidecar Tommy, Kitty D, The Luminaries, Geno Cochino, The Makers, Ron Levy, Michael Hart, Manny Greensector, Terrakroma, Motion Potion and DJ Wolfie.

The Summer has been a non-starter here in Scotland. It hit me pretty hard the other day when my vitamin D deficient face looked out the window for another overcast day in the lab. But it’s kinda beautiful in its own way and it adds extra meaning to songs that can normally coast over you. Me & Fine Art made three tapes this month – one for Dazed, one for Nalden and this one here was just sorta labour of love with some really weird shit ( verging from new Hudson Mo to modern classical, fusion, 90s rnb & soul ) to bring some balance and new meaning to a Summer of dreich ( Scottish for shitty weather ).

Joe Corrales, Jr. aka Yppah (pronounced “Yippah”) is back. The young Mexican-American from Texas debuted on Ninja Tune in 2006 with his album, “You Are Beautiful At all Times,” and now releases his sophomore effort, “They Know What Ghost Know.”

Fashioning a rockier sound than last time out, the album draws on a cultural heritage that took in My Bloody Valentine alongside hip hop and which is heavily influenced by various forms of electronic music, psychedelic soul and rock.

Opening track “Son Saves The Rest” is wall-of-noise guitar pummeller. “Gumball Machine Weekend” sounds like southern-fried Go! Team with more soul. “Playing With Fireworks” somehow reminds you of the way you felt stuck between childhood and the adult world, not a million miles from instrumental tracks from the Phantom Band. “Shutter Speed” is nostalgia psyched into a memorable tune. Title track “They Know What Ghost Know” is West Coast rock reimagined as trance-rite, a spooky, echo-heavy drum-roll-filled set of repetitions and overlaps that builds into a tune which DJ Shadow in his heyday might have dreamed of making. “Sun Flower Sun Kissed” takes the doomy grey skies of MBV and gives them a Texan make-over. “Bobbie Joe Wilson” channels the Dust Brothers and proves Yppah hasn’t lost his love of hip hop. Corrales build moods through a combination of melody, rhythm and sonics and if those moods are mainly melancholy, they’re also ecstatic.

After a series of shows last year from SXSW to Japan, there’s a real feeling that Joe Corrales is ready to step up into the big league. The album has that feel to it – that it has been made under huge skies, that it’s possible to make music which is epic and intimate all at once. It’s beguiling and beautiful and makes you a little giddy, too. Find out what Ghost know.

So we’ve always thought the Monome is a pretty cool device for making music, among other random uses its makers have come up with. The Monome is like the nerd’s paradise for audio: simple, with a beautiful design, and so many different applications because of its simplicity and integration with MaxMSP, which opens up so many applications and possibilities if you know how to program or are friends with a programmer who will hook you up. Actually, you don’t even have to have any friends to get cool applications for max/msp that can be used with the Monome! Ah, but we digress.

At any rate, the point of this post is not to tout how awesome the Monome is (even though it really is awesome), but rather to clarify something about a song used in a Monome demonstration made by the Monome company! Check it out:

So we came across this video and it’s actually how we discovered the Monome. Late hours wasting time on YouTube will lead you to things like this. We’ve all been there before. Well, so this video–Monome device aside–struck us as really nice in aesthetic terms. The song is beautiful, the flashing lights are kind of cool, but mostly the song is great. So, we managed to get a hold of the producer of the song–Tehn–and he hooked us up. However, this was back when he had the song available on his web site, which is interesting in and of itself. However, it seems as though the song from the video above is no longer available on Tehn’s site. If it is, we just weren’t looking hard enough. However, to save you the trouble, you can just save this download link for yourself!

Velapene Screen – “Chop Suey:”

Back in 1991, when the raves were in warehouses and event organizers frequently closed the garage doors to avoid cops raiding the shows.

Music like this would more likely have been found in a “chill-out” room, but is still reminiscent of the period. Somewhere between that late 90′s 20/20 rave exposé with Barbara Walters, and the disgusting spread of Hot Topic stores in malls across the country, the US rave scene went tragic.

Boards of Canada (commonly abbreviated BOC) are a Scottish electronic music duo consisting of brothers Michael Sandison (born June 1, 1970) and Marcus Eoin Sandison (born July 21, 1971). They are signed with Warp Records and have released several works on that label with little advertising and few interviews, while also having an elusive and obscure back-catalogue of releases on their self-run Music70 label. They have also recorded a few minor works under the alias Hell Interface.

Boards of Canada’s music is reminiscent of the warm, scratchy, artificial sounds of 1970s media and contains themes of childhood, nostalgia and the natural world. Michael and Marcus have mentioned the documentary films of the National Film Board of Canada, from which the group’s name is derived, as a source of inspiration.

There are lots of BOC imitators and with good reason. BOC does for downtempo stuff what Aphex Twin did for IDM as a whole, even though BOC is arguably IDM as well.

You’ll notice none of the tracks from the three most recent releases of BOC made it to our 10-track playlist. In 2005, with the release of The Campfire Headphase, BOC made a noticeable change to their sound. Granted, we like the newer music, but as far as BOC classics, we don’t really think anything from The Campfire Headphase, Dayvan Cowboy (2006) or Trans Canada Highway (2006) really are on the same great level as previous BOC tracks. Admittedly, there are probably fans out there who like the newer BOC releases better than the older sound, but to each their own.

We are of the belief that you have to be careful with downtempo music. At a certain level it starts to sound like easy listening and loses its edge if you go too far in a certain direction. Just as a lot of electronic music can sound like video game music if artists let it. Of course, sometimes artists deliberately want their songs to have video game influence, but nobody wants their music to sound like easy listening if they’re not writing stuff in that genre.

BOC has been in the game since 1987,  which is impressive, seeing as they were 17 and 18 years old back then. We still haven’t gotten around to listening to their earlier works, but that could be an interesting day.
