Happy 2012! As we all embark on this exciting (and perhaps historic) new year, we would like to take a moment to share our intentions for the Do LaB community and Lightning in a Bottle festival. Whether prophesied, or simply the true state of affairs, our community, our nation, and our planet face great change at this particular moment in time. We invite you all to embrace this change and continue celebrating life and our incredible human spirit during these tumultuous times. Though our problems seem many, and solutions difficult, we must remember to approach them with grace, love and celebration for in this attitude lies our best way forward.

LIB has always been about discovering and enacting a different way of living. A way that is more in touch with the earth, with each other, and with ourselves. As the pace of change continues to accelerate all around us, and old ways of thinking begin to reach their logical and useful ends, LIB continues to expand its spiritual and educational aspects so that we, as a community, may boldly embrace and lead the way into this new world. The Temple of Consciousness will be bigger than ever this year and will include inspiring new structures for the yoga and meditation area, as well as the beautiful area for speakers and workshops in the heart of the Temple. At the same time, we have a music and performance lineup brewing (scheduled to be released in March) that could be our best yet and is sure to awaken the celebration of dance that we hold so dear.

We are so happy and proud of the way LIB has been able to continue to grow and mature, while continuing to preserve that indescribable vibe we have all come to love so much. We thank everyone that participates in this event, from the volunteers and the musicians, to the painters, builders, artists and crew, and especially to you for contributing to that feeling that makes everyone feel so welcome and happy to join us in capturing lightning in a bottle, year after year.

It is to all of you that understand and reinforce the intention of the festival that we offer our early bird discount tickets for 24 hours starting on Monday, January 16th at 7am. We can’t be absolutely sure, but all indications point to the festival becoming sold out earlier than ever before this year. We don’t want you, our valuable core of festival goers, to miss out on tickets this year. We want to see you smiling again, bringing your incredible energy and understanding to help us make Lightning in a Bottle 2012 our greatest year ever.

It’s not so much the actual release of this “cracktro” or “loader” from Razor 1911 that interests us, but more the loader itself, the music, coding and graphics.

Sick.

We had a chance to check out the third night of the OohLaL.A. Festival and it was the best. Never seen a crowd quite like the one that night at the El Rey Theater. It was pretty diverse, with so many people conversing in French, even though we were at El Rey it felt like being at a show in Paris.

The artists playing on the night we were there include DJ Cam, Feadz and Chateau Marmont. The performances were high-energy and most people were out on the dance floor enjoying the hype.

It was a lot of fun attending the final night of the festival and made us wish we had gone to the previous two nights, which apparently were jam-packed with people as well.

New music from an artist we follow closely: Sense aka Adam Raisbeck. Sense has been writing profound songs for years though, so this isn’t surprising. Just because there’s no surprise doesn’t mean it can’t be enjoyed though. Oh, yeah. This track is 12 minutes and 14 seconds of magical entertainment.

It’s a pretty fitting remix because Boom Bip and BOC have a similar sound to us, but they both have their own unique flavors. Here’s the teaser for the forthcoming Boom Bip release:

Lex Records will release Boom Bip’s Zig Zaj September 27, 2011. Zig Zaj features guest spots from Alex Kapranos of Franz Ferdinand, Money Mark, Luke Steele (Empire of the Sun, Sleepy Jackson), singer-songwriter Cate Le Bon, and Mikey Noyce (Bon Iver, Gayngs.)

Zig Zaj breaks new sonic ground while simultaneously underscoring the strengths Boom Bip fans already appreciate, particularly his ear for distinctive timbres and off-kilter rhythms. On “Tum Tum,” polychromatic percussion volleys back-and-forth atop a bed of slow-moving keyboard textures. With its menacing bass line, the clattering “Pele” makes a perfect complement to early Public Image Ltd on a mix tape or playlist. Permeated with invigorating fuzz and distorted vocals by Money Mark, “Manabozh” sounds like the theme music for a futuristic blood sport, a disquieting yet muscular mélange of triumph and tragedy. Alex Kapranos of Franz Ferdinand brings the brooding “Goodbye Lovers and Friends” to life.

In addition to the nucleus of the Boom Bip live band, the participants frequently included Josh Klinghoffer (Red Hot Chili Peppers), Eric Gardner (Gnarls Barkley, Charlotte Gainsbourg), Josiah Steinbrick of F-Minus and members of LA post-punk group Warpaint.

Boom Bip has been creating mind blowing soundscapes for over a decade beginning with a collab with Dose One on Circle for Mush which led to the release of his first solo album Seed to Sun on Lex in 2002, a remix album Corymd (2004), Blue Eyed in the Red Room (2005) and his collab with Gruff Rhys of Super Furry Animals, Neon Neon’s Mercury Prize nominated Stainless Steel in 2008. A critically acclaimed, multi-faceted producer, Boom Bip has graced the covers BPM and URB magazine among others.

Man you already know who it is. GFS and Noisy Meditation are hitting us with a mix that can’t be stopped. Already creating a buzz on the Internet, GFS has been doing this for a while now and his DJ skills, tastemaking talent, and production ability are on the rise. You’re really not going to find a more unique palette of music than you get from Godfather Sage.

We’re adding a mixtape category now to the music menu, purely on account of this mix. Can’t stop. Won’t stop.

This was released in 1995. It’s a hot jam. Slow and you have to be in the right mood for it. Michelle and ParkNasty have already made picks for the 30 day song challenge, but this is a great pick for a song to listen to when you’re sad, so long as you have the patience for it and listen to the entire song.

So Jeff Weiss over at Pop & Hiss — The LA Times Music Blog — talks about the Lightning In a Bottle Festival (“LIB”), which is only a couple days away! The line-up is massive, and we’re feeling what LIB has to offer.

This year, LIB has already run a mixtape contest, where the winner receives free entrance as well as a slot in the schedule of performances during the four day festival (among other things). The winner of the selection is THE SEX PIXELS. We’re looking forward to hearing their set, although it could be quite late. Could be? Actually, HERE’S A LINK TO THE FINAL SCHEDULE, so now you know the exact time they’ll be on (2:30am Saturday morning).

The Glitch Mob: “Drive It Like You Stole It:”

This forthcoming record is the best, especially the title track.

With the dust barely settling on The Look EP, LuckyMe start 2011 with another Jacques Greene 12” . Another Girl is a brand new A Side backed with remixes from London heavyweight and Rinse FM futurist Braiden and Mark Flash from the very legendary Underground Resistance.

Another Girl shows the continued development of Jacquesʼ sound, with a deep beating heart of analogue bass drawn around glistening RnB vocals – this is a warm sweep of modern house designed to cast a spell on the club.

The B-side offers remixes to two key tracks from Jacques debut EP with us. First up Braiden takes Holdin On to a pitch-black dancefloor and uses his signature textured atmospheres to pull something aggressive out of the jackinʼ original. Then URʼs Mark Flash follows with a re-up of The Look that delivers one of the most satisfying slabs of Detroit techno you might of heard in years. Its masterstroke is sounding exactly how a UR remix ought to sound. The whole record is legit.

Since The Look dropped there has been a storm of attention around the 21 year old Montreal based prodigy: serious airplay, mixtapes, leaks, remixes and print press – all multiplied by real word of mouth. Jacques appeared on more than one “artists to watch in 2011” but being older than his years, Greene has spent the Winter working on new music, dubplates and a full analogue live show; preparing for two upcoming tours – Canada / US & Europe.
