Jahmek Power aka Jammer is one of the true pioneers of the grime scene. A builder of bridges and peacemaker rather than a loose cannon, Jammer is one of the few people in London who can count both Dizzee Rascal and Wiley amongst his friends and who has worked with Kano, Tinchy, Chipmunk and just about everyone else, underground and overground. And if none of them have a bad word to say about him, that’s because, at heart, Jammer believes more in music than he does in ego.

Jammer always knew he’d do something in music. His dad was a musician and he grew up fiddling with the buttons on the family stereo. As a teenager he started out DJing drum & bass and ragga with a mate, DJ Supa D (now one of UK funky’s biggest names) after the pair of them found some cheap decks down Hackney Wick market. After leaving school he went to work at the distributors Essential Direct just as So Solid and Ms Dynamite started to come through from the underground. Jammer saved up his wages to buy a basic production set-up which he installed in the cellar of his family’s house in Leytonstone. The space was to become known as The Dungeon and to many people is one of the key locations in any geographical history of grime.

With friends D Double E and Hyper Jammer formed 187 Crew, the three of them eventually migrating to join Nasty Crew around 2000. Nasty were to become one of thedefining crews within the early growth of the musical style which would eventually be named Grime. Their famous Monday night show on pirate station Déjà Vu started at this time and they were amongst the first to be playing releases from the likes of Roll Deep and Dizzee. And as well as the radio show, Jammer was producing, for instance putting together the beat for “Take You Out” – the first Nasty Crew track to feature Kano. Jammer followed this up by releasing Kano’s “Boyz Luv Girlz” on his own Jahmektheworld imprint. Alongside this sat his own “Dubz” releases on the massively influential Locked On imprint, his renowned remix of “Are You Really From The Ends?” and the “Why?” white label, released by Wiley.

Jammer’s connection to Locked On would lead to Kano and D Double E meeting Mike Skinner and eventually signing to 679, an event which played its part in the dissolution of Nasty Crew. Suddenly finding himself with less rappers in the studio Jammer began to play around with MCing himself. The result was “Murkle Man” – one of the funniest (and biggest) grime tunes (and videos) ever made, and one which emphasised that the music could incorporate humour and self-deprecation as well as macho posturing. In between touring the country in a purple and green superhero costume, Jammer found time to release the excellent “Are You Dumb?” mixtape series (check the cover to volume 3, showing Jam tying his shoelace in front of oncoming traffic on the M11) and mastermind, film and record the “Lord of the Mics” DVDs, all from that same basement in the family home and including such classics as the clash between Kano and Wiley.

Since then, in between the mixtapes and DVDs, Jammer has toured the world with Dizzee Rascal and the Dirtee Stank crew (as well as recording with him on the “Murkle Man” remix and “Lemon”), become a member of the most influential contemporary grime collective, Boy Better Know, featured on the BBK remix of Jay Sean’s “Stay” (over 1 million views on YouTube) and on and on. All this and the man is still only 27 and about to release his debut album!

When Kid Sister announced this show on her Facebook, we hadn’t even heard about it, but snagged tickets online the same day because intuition was just shouting that it would be a fun time. Kid Sister–aka Melisa Young–and Flosstradamus–J2K (Josh Young) and Autobot (Curt Cameruci): are you kidding us? Our expectation for the show could not have been more accurate!

Detroit Bar isn’t a huge venue in terms of space, but it’s big enough and the vibe there the whole night was awesome. We arrived early: before the place had even really filled-up, and it was still entertaining to start the night by listening to good music as the TV screens played clips from the 80′s. Not much time passed before the place was packed and everyone was dancing.

This was the best show that we’ve been to in months. It’s not purely about the music, of course, but it’s also about the crowd. Not only were the performances great, but everyone at the event was pretty chill. You know those times you’ve found yourself out and there’s some belligerent drunk guy trying to start beef with you over nothing, or when everyone’s so hung-up on looking cool that they are kind of awkward and don’t even seem like they’re really having a good time? Well, this night was the opposite. Most everyone seemed like they were just busting loose and enjoying themselves. For that reason it was a memorable night. Okay, so you may have noticed the annoying feedback in the series of clips. Oh well, just like love, shows aren’t perfect. Kid Sister handled it in a breezy way though, and honestly, the energy during the show was so intense with everyone all hyped-up by the performance that it wasn’t all that noticeable.

Troublemaker’s Konkrete-era sonic experiments with such Celestial partners as rapper Phoenix Orion and junglist Hive fueled Kouzomis’s personal ambitions. Not one to miss a beat, he next enlisted E. Moss to form Backyard Bangers, whose eponymous debut track – a collaboration with DJ Z-Trip – is on 2002’s Constant Elevation compilation.

The album’s title typified the trajectory of Kouzomis’s career then and today characterizes Troublemaker’s professional advance and ascent. This DJ since then has steadily turned out remixes and commercial pieces true to his name, consistently causing the best kinds of diggable disturbance. Whether editing for the likes of Bonde do Role or Justice, winning the annual URB Magazine/Scion Mixtape contest, or re-working Linkin Park’s “Runaway” to beat out more seasoned studio mixers’ versions for a place on the multi-platinum Reanimation album, Troublemaker has proven himself both a master producer and DJ. With a diverse discography boasting works ranging from Johnny Cash Remixed and Good Charlotte’s Greatest Remixes to the Peter Bjorn and John remixes (now exceeding 20K downloads in the month it’s been out), Kouzomis has roused the audio rabble in-car, in-club, and even in-Capital: in January 2009, Troublemaker – alongside De La Soul, Santogold, and Shepherd Fairey – rocked D.C. at the Manifest Hope Inauguration Party in Washington.

While others are satisfied with the standard mix-and-tour, Troublemaker refuses to settle – or settle down. His first solo album, Maestro, features tracks like the alt/modern rock-tinged “All Night” and the hip hop/pop-appealing “I’m Famous” that demonstrate Troublemaker’s ability not only to produce and remix others but also to do it for himself. Maestro sets itself above and apart by including new up-and-comers. Their sheer diversity and Troublemaker’s motley musical skills together make this album new and unique. In its conception and in your ears, Troublemaker’s Maestro truly is the kind of aural showcase and body-moving rollercoaster that can’t (or won’t) be stopped.

True to form, Troublemaker continues plotting mischief both in-studio and out-. In addition to spinning for his Wasted Space residency at the Hard Rock Hotel Las Vegas, getting ready to play The Roxy on Sunset with Adam Tensta, U-N-I, and The 87 Stick Up Kids, masterminding remixes (Tim Armstrong’s Poet’s Life album for Hellcat Records; Matt and Kim’s “Daylight” for EA Video Games; Big B, Mastodon, Phoenix, and Zion I), and producing several new artists of various genres, Troublemaker is gearing up for May’s Hope Artists Festival in Kenya, Africa, as well as the brief European tour he’ll play en route to the States in June. He is also planning U.S. tour dates for July to promote Maestro, due for release on July 7, 2009.

Los Angeles native Josh Kouzomis – known in the industry as Troublemaker – began making his musical name in the early 1990’s as a college radio DJ and music director at Ohio University’s ACRN. His school stint was brief but critical, and resoundingly affirmed Kouzomis’s future lay elsewhere – specifically, Los Angeles.

Once home, Kouzomis joined punk/hardcore giant Epitaph Records first as a grass-roots marketing intern and then as a radio promoter, positions he capitalized on. He took what he’d learned firsthand about the indie music business and production during his Epitaph tenure to cofound Celestial Recordings, the acclaimed underground hip hop and drum-and-bass label, in 1998. Just one year later, Rolling Stone named Celestial-affiliated Konkrete Jungle (L.A.) 1999’s Best Dance Club.

Now that you’re educated on the HOPE cause and Troublemaker, what better way to conclude this post than with a track from Troublemaker’s new album that hits stores on July 28, 2009!

Troublemaker – “Work It Out feat. Naptron and Phoenix Orion:”

Joe Corrales, Jr. aka Yppah (pronounced “Yippah”) is back. The young Mexican-American from Texas debuted on Ninja Tune in 2006 with his album, “You Are Beautiful At all Times,” and now releases his sophomore effort, “They Know What Ghost Know.”

Fashioning a rockier sound than last time out, the album draws on a cultural heritage that took in My Bloody Valentine alongside hip hop and which is heavily influenced by various forms of electronic music, psychedelic soul and rock.

Opening track “Son Saves The Rest” is wall-of-noise guitar pummeller. “Gumball Machine Weekend” sounds like southern-fried Go! Team with more soul. “Playing With Fireworks” somehow reminds you of the way you felt stuck between childhood and the adult world, not a million miles from instrumental tracks from the Phantom Band. “Shutter Speed” is nostalgia psyched into a memorable tune. Title track “They Know What Ghost Know” is West Coast rock reimagined as trance-rite, a spooky, echo-heavy drum-roll-filled set of repetitions and overlaps that builds into a tune which DJ Shadow in his heyday might have dreamed of making. “Sun Flower Sun Kissed” takes the doomy grey skies of MBV and gives them a Texan make-over. “Bobbie Joe Wilson” channels the Dust Brothers and proves Yppah hasn’t lost his love of hip hop. Corrales build moods through a combination of melody, rhythm and sonics and if those moods are mainly melancholy, they’re also ecstatic.

After a series of shows last year from SXSW to Japan, there’s a real feeling that Joe Corrales is ready to step up into the big league. The album has that feel to it – that it has been made under huge skies, that it’s possible to make music which is epic and intimate all at once. It’s beguiling and beautiful and makes you a little giddy, too. Find out what Ghost know.

If asked to pick three favorites from all the tracks, we’d choose, Frankmusik – “Confusion Girl (Don Diablo loves to slowdance remix),” Dragonette – “Fixing to Thrill (Don Diablo Dub),” and Don Diablo & Example – “Hooligans (Spor Remix).”

Really feeling the new version of “Blindfolded,” produced by Jimmy Edgar on This Charming Man. “Save,” has a really unique beat with great snares. It’s also up there with some of our favorite flows from Theophilus on the record too. The bonus track “Enjoy the Sun,” goes in a really different direction that’s good. The fusion of Jesse Boykins III and Theophilus London is no joke. Add that to some Machinedrum instrumentals and you’ve got an instant-winner. “Want U for Myself (feat. Peter Hadar),” kind of reminds us of Gus Gus or Stardust, although it can’t really be labeled as straight house.
