Here’s a theory we propose: rather than spending money on 3D technology development, the entertainment industry really needs spend more time on holographic TV development. Forget flat screen, get your media floating in mid-air like R2D2 in Star Wars (only in HD), and that’s a step in the right direction. In Japan, they already have concerts with nobody on stage, but just a holographic video of a performer. Yes, they have branded computer-generated musicians that sell-out venues.

Swatch has released these pretty awesome touch watches that merge the company’s watchmaking reliability with touch technology. Seems like more and more we’re gravitating towards replacing buttons with touch-sensitive technology. It’s probably a step in the right direction.

The more bottlenecks we can eliminate in striving towards making the integration of life and technology seamless, the better our lives will be. That idea is probably at least worth considering, unless you’re anti-technology or afraid of the unknown, which you’re neither. Right?

First of all, iOS 5 for your iDevice introduces 220 new features, so it’s totally worth the upgrade. However, if you’re using a 3GS iPhone, iOS 5 will probably run pretty sluggishly on your iPhone. Most iDevices (iPhone 4, iPad, iPod Touch) will run jailbroken iOS 5 fine).

Second, you should know about a tethered jailbreak: this means you will have to use redsn0w to enter DFU mode and have it “just boot tethered” every time you power cycle your device. In other words, if your iDevice gets turned-off, you will lose all jailbreak features until you reconnect it to a computer and use redsn0w to boot it back into jailbroken mode. This is really kind of a hassle when you’re installing Cydia apps that require you to reboot, but once you’re setup, you can enjoy the benefits of a jailbroken iOS 5 and just respring the device to flush out the memory (RAM not the data stored on the iPhone solid-state drive).

Important Note: iPhone users, if you rely on an unlocked baseband you MUST stay away from iOS 5 update, it will eliminate your unlock as it will upgrade your iPhone baseband to one that can’t be unlocked. The iPhone Dev-team will release Redsn0w 0.9.9b5 to let unlockers able to upgrade to iOS 5 with preserving the unlockable basebands. This has been the deal since the first iPhone jailbreak in October 2009.

At any rate, once you have the software, it’s pretty easy to jailbreak. Just back-up your device in iTunes first, then hold shift or control (depending on if in Windows or Mac Os X) and browse to the downloaded iOS 5 firmware and perform a restore on the device. Once the restore has finished, go through the new prompts on the phone and select “restore device from previous back-up.” After that, just launch redsn0w, click on “Extras,” manually select the iOS 5 IPSW, then go ahead and jailbreak your iPhone. So, if you never noticed, we like Apple products. Wouldn’t go so far as to say we’re die-hard/purist fans, since we jailbreak every iOS product we own, but Apple makes good stuff. Have you seen the Apple store in a mall lately? That place is non-stop. They’re awesome at marketing and make pretty electronics though. Honestly, Apple is more of a phone/portable electronics maker to us than a computer company, but gadgets are pretty exciting.

For instance, we got a Speck PixelSkin HD for free with the iPhone 4 due to “death grip” antenna issues. Pretty sure an executive that headed the design team at Apple got fired over that issue with the antenna. Also, have you heard how Steven Jobs has anger issues and flies off the handle routinely on his employees? He tried to take ninja stars from a Japanese airport once and launched into a freak-out fury when Japanese airport security told him that he couldn’t bring them on his personal jet. Okay, so it’s a little ridiculous that he couldn’t take weapons on his private jet, but you never know with that guy. Don’t trust anyone today.

Post digression: so on top of making good products, Speck now partners with cool companies like Out Of Print and Burton to make sturdy cases with cool designs. Obviously, Burton is a snowboarding company and we have always been into their design style for boards and snowboarding apparel. Users aren’t the only ones seeking answers from Sony regarding the recent wide scale PSN breach. The United States Congress has written a formal letter to the the Chairman of SCEA, Kazuo Hirai. The letter requests further details regarding the PSN breach, which will then be discussed at a hearing taking place on May 4, 2011 addressing Federal data security legislation. The hearing will explore issues “regarding the threat of data theft to American consumers”.

There’s been tweeting going on with regard to the exploit that will jailbreak iOS 4.1, and it’s official, but not yet released. This time, a hacker with the alias Pod2g discovered the hack, as opposed to Comex (who was previously rumored to have found it). Pod2g found the exploit in under an hour of iOS 4.1 going public. Of course, the iPhone Development Team still has plenty of programming to do before the official release. They work quickly though.

What’s more, Pod2G and hacker p0sixninja were able to find a “new boot level exploit,” which means that Apple will be unable to block the jailbreak until they completely upgrade the hardware in all devices running the iOS platform, due to the fact that a boot level exploit acts on the hardware itself no matter what changes are made to system software.

George Hotz, a 20-year-old, also known as geohot, is recognized for his help in unlocking the iPhone, allowing the phone to be used with other wireless carriers as well as enabling many other software features. Of course, all of this is contrary to AT&T and Apple’s wishes. Recently, Hotz found a glitch in the PlayStation 3 that enables users to jailbreak–or bypass system limitations put in place by Sony–so that unauthorized software can be run on the system as well as copying of the system’s games to a hard drive to store and run them. PS3 lovers will enjoy the news. It’s a dream come true for them.

Though Sony may have thought it was safe since it implemented Blu-Ray media into the technological market, it seems the grace-period of no modifications for the PlayStation 3 has ended. Sony patched their firmware release 3.4.2, just yesterday, to render the exploit or hole that Hotz found useless. However, so long as you don’t update your PS3 software from 3.4.1 to 3.4.2, you can still enable the world of features that’s opening up. You can still downgrade your PS3 using PS Jailbreak, through firmware 3.55, which was released on December 7, 2010. However, you should know that if you downgrade without backing-up the blu-ray specific information for your PS3 first, you will lose Blu-Ray functionality!

There’s also a USB drive mod that is pretty much used solely for backing-up/copying PS3 games on sale for about $149 $99, but it’s illegal of course, and Sony is already cracking down on its distribution. However, if you’re feeling gutsy, you can order it through the distributors here. Technically, the PS Jailbreak dongle itself is not illegal until actually used on a PS3. There’s really no need to use a USB dongle anymore. Just update to custom firmware using a USB flash drive.

If you’re a little more tech-savvy and you want a cheaper alternative to hacking your PS3, you need to buy a USB Development Board or an AT90USBKEY. These aren’t the same as regular USB flash drives, as you can see from the picture of the AT90USBKEY below. You can get one for about $30, then if you follow a walk-through and are pretty comfortable with software, it’s not too difficult to get through. Click on the AT90USBKEY image to be redirected to a vendor where you can check the specs of one. Oh, you’ll also need utilities like these to get your hack on. Apparently cell phones like the Nokia N900, Android, Palm Pre, (soon jailbroken iPhones) and even certain (newer) Texas Instruments calculators can serve the same purpose if you own any of those. There’s no need to buy one of these anymore either.

With the release of iOS 4.0 and its fresh jailbreak, we’re happy to see that you can still be ironic–even when you own an Apple product–by hacking it. Even though many of the new  iOS 4.0 features have been available via jailbreak for some time now on earlier iOS versions, it’s nice to see that Apple is stealing the ideas of people developing software for free or for little profit. Apple is pissed-off enough as it is about people hacking their iPhones, so why not retaliate with theft?

It has been five years since an album has been released by EGADZ! aka Erik Nava, and now he’s retiring the EGADZ! moniker with the album “Egadz is Dead,” which is dropping September 15th! For the regulars here, hopefully it’s obvious by now that we love abstract / alternative hip hop tracks with solid electronic influence combined with various other influences. EGADZ! started off the year with a three week tour with Restiform Bodies of Anticon and is rumored to be collaborating with Sole on a full length project, one of the founders of Anticon Records (much respect to Anticon, by the way). Most recently he got back from a three week headlining southwest US tour, during which he blasted up the place at Daddy Kev’s “Low End Theory.” If that weren’t impressive enough, EGADZ! also has had major licensing deals with DC Shoes/Subaru/ESPN/Fuel TV.

Future plans for EGADZ! involve moving on to his new project, “NAVA,” which he’s currently looking to sign with a label.
