Saw this on MTV earlier and it’s so bad. Normally, we keep it positive about the musics, but this song and video are ridiculous. Will.i.am is like junk food for music. Think about all the reasons you wouldn’t eat junk food then think about this song and how weak sauce it is. Will.i.am was working on a business deal with Universal Music Group and we heard he’s a fairly opinionated dude. Not just like strong convictions, but opinionated in a pretentious way. Don’t ask how we know that.

Will.i.am shouldn’t have to tell us how hard the beat is, really. The beat should just speak for itself. Come on buddy!

Then there’s the whole involvement of Mick Jagger. Seriously? Jagger should be thanking Ke$ha right now because since she and Maroon 5 wrote tracks playing on the words “swagger” and “Jagger,” which seems to have created an unfortunate ripple-effect. Now we have to listen to and more horribly see Mick Jagger still performing. Yes, the Rolling Stones made awesome music, but that was years ago, and unfortunately their time has passed. In the entertainment business, sometimes retirement really isn’t such a bad thing. Rather than going hard, Jagger should just go home!

We’ve got that crisis like Jagger, because this song reeks of an older dude trying to be cool for Jagger. You’ve got to know when to fold them, just like if you’re on a casino online. It’s so tempting to go hard though and try to win big when you’ve got money to burn, isn’t it? Call us what you will, but when we gamble, we like to get our video poker on. Here’s a theory we propose: rather than spending money on 3D technology development, the entertainment industry really needs spend more time on holographic TV development. Forget flat screen, get your media floating in mid-air like R2D2 in Star Wars (only in HD), and that’s a step in the right direction. In Japan, they already have concerts with nobody on stage, but just a holographic video of a performer. Yes, they have branded computer-generated musicians that sell-out venues.

The letter requests further details regarding the PSN breach, which will then be discussed at a hearing taking place on May 4, 2011 addressing Federal data security legislation. The hearing will explore issues “regarding the threat of data theft to American consumers”.

Remote access functionality with AV devices

The anonymous hacker group have resumed their DDOS attacks on Sony today. Some of you are being greeted with a 80710D36 error message while attempting to login to the PSN, it is being reported that the error is being caused by these DDOS attacks which are lagging the PSN. In addition to the error messages on the Playstation Network, various official Sony sites are failing to load or loading slowly. It appears these sites are also currently under attack from the anonymous hacking group.

George Hotz, a 20-year-old, also known as geohot, is recognized for his help in unlocking the iPhone, allowing the phone to be used with other wireless carriers as well as enabling many other software features. Of course, all of this is contrary to AT&T and Apple’s wishes. Recently, Hotz found a glitch in the PlayStation 3 that enables users to jailbreak–or bypass system limitations put in place by Sony–so that unauthorized software can be run on the system as well as copying of the system’s games to a hard drive to store and run them. PS3 lovers will enjoy the news. It’s a dream come true for them.

Though Sony may have thought it was safe since it implemented Blu-Ray media into the technological market, it seems the grace-period of no modifications for the PlayStation 3 has ended. Sony patched their firmware release 3.4.2, just yesterday, to render the exploit or hole that Hotz found useless. However, so long as you don’t update your PS3 software from 3.4.1 to 3.4.2, you can still enable the world of features that’s opening up. You can still downgrade your PS3 using PS Jailbreak, through firmware 3.55, which was released on December 7, 2010. However, you should know that if you downgrade without backing-up the blu-ray specific information for your PS3 first, you will lose Blu-Ray functionality!

There’s also a USB drive mod that is pretty much used solely for backing-up/copying PS3 games on sale for about $149 $99, but it’s illegal of course, and Sony is already cracking down on its distribution. However, if you’re feeling gutsy, you can order it through the distributors here. Technically, the PS Jailbreak dongle itself is not illegal until actually used on a PS3. There’s really no need to use a USB dongle anymore. Just update to custom firmware using a USB flash drive.

If you’re a little more tech-savvy and you want a cheaper alternative to hacking your PS3, you need to buy a USB Development Board or an AT90USBKEY. These aren’t the same as regular USB flash drives, as you can see from the picture of the AT90USBKEY below. You can get one for about $30, then if you follow a walk-through and are pretty comfortable with software, it’s not too difficult to get through. Click on the AT90USBKEY image to be redirected to a vendor where you can check the specs of one. Oh, you’ll also need utilities like these to get your hack on. Apparently cell phones like the Nokia N900, Android, Palm Pre, (soon jailbroken iPhones) and even certain (newer) Texas Instruments calculators can serve the same purpose if you own any of those. There’s no need to buy one of these anymore either.

Can’t say that we’re into boxing since we don’t ever watch it. The closest we came to boxing is that most of us are from the Nintendo generation, so we grew up with the awesome game Mike Tyson’s Punch-Out!!.

It’s no secret that Mike Tyson was a boxing legend, but in large part, the reason we love this video is because the editor could not have chosen better background music for such brute force than the soundtrack theme song from the movie Requiem for a Dream.

Kids these days are doing crazy stuff in their home studios. There are lots of remixes of this floating around on YouTube but this sounds like it’s one of the best.

So, if you don’t know what chiptunes are, that’s okay: you’re just not as nerdy as we are. However, we will say that the Amiga sound that is what makes chiptunes is still prevalent, even from mainstream producers like Timbaland and Danja Hands. We enjoy hearing some new 8-bit style or Amiga tracks and here’s one for your listening pleasure. You might not enjoy this on its own, but when incorporated into a full-on, studio-produced track, oh the awesomeness. We’re happy to see that this style is still around and that people are finding new ways to incorporate the old. That’s what it’s all about, really. Taking conventions and doing new things with what has already been done!

Note there are even chiptune parties, like this one in philly we found the flier for on Geekadelphia.com. It featured entirely music like the streamable track above, no doubt.

So Alex Metric remixed this track by Adam Freeland entitled “Under Control.” Adam Freeland has been making music for a long time now and we’ve noticed that in the past five years or so his style has gravitated from straight breaks to more alternative, pop-sounding vocals over breaks. We like both the old and new Freeland. His new stuff is totally suited for playing driving games. Try playing Burnout Revenge on PS2 or Xbox 360 (one of the best racing video games of all time) and you’ll see what we mean.

It’s a synthesizer spectacular everyone. That’s right. Lipp is bringing the heat here. We find his interview below funny, but more interesting is his style of music. Everything from jazz to electronic video game sounds to heavy basses and catchy beats are within. One funny thing about this record is that every track on it is four minutes and 20 seconds long.

Lipp’s latest record, entitled Peace Love Weed 3d, just dropped on January 27, 2009, so it really hasn’t been around for that long. We have taken the liberty of selecting our favorites from the release for your listening pleasure.

So, lately, we have been getting a handful of angry messages (generally without merit or grounds) about the site. People tell us what they think the content should or shouldn’t be, or try to criticize the posts without any information to support their opinions. Well, guess that’s just life, huh? A) Contrary to what you might believe, we do care here. As a matter of fact, if you have content or corrections to the posts that are constructive and not just ripping on them, then we’ll consider either changing my posts or future posts.

B) More specifically, let’s say you want a post with music or video clips about an artist or fashion, etc. Rather than writing, “This is stupid,” you could write suggestions (and not sarcastic ones either). If you really show interest in having a post about someone or something you’re into, we’re definitely open to it.

C) Anyway, if A and B fail to be satisfied, then this site is just going to go on being what it is.

Note his downtrodden pathetic reaction. He clearly doesn’t speak English as his first language, but to say “Mama,” when you’re upset at his age? This guy is not winning cool points, even if it does suck that his flat-panel TV got destroyed. It’s like, sometimes man, you just gotta be more careful when you play video games. And damn it, there are too many people in the world who don’t pay close enough attention to what they’re doing when they’re doing it (like say, when driving). So, we learn, you must focus with all your might when playing Nintendo Wii!

Oh and since now we’re sharing pics that we took personally of things and showing video clips of TV devastation, here’s a $40,000.00 70″, 1080p LCD television from Samsung (model  LN-T7081F) that you can now purchase at Best Buy. Shocked? We were. Man. Not only is this beast the same price as a low-end luxury car, but a Best Buy representative came by and stated that “No photos are allowed in the store,” while we were trying to snap some for you, the audience. What’s hilarious is that we don’t even think Best Buy has an official store policy against in-store photos being taken.

Okay, so now that it’s official, we were shocked and were so shaken up that we couldn’t manage to take a decent photo of the damn image-quality that’s worth showing you, so the best we have to show for it is a blurred image of Keira Knightley’s face from Pirates of the Caribbean:

So what’s so damn great about this TV? Sure, it’s 70″ and has a resolution of 1080p, but damn. Why $40k? That’s completely absurd! Who pays that much for their TV? Plus, you know that in a few years they’ll have better technology at a better value. We know that Best Buy has marked the price up at least 17-20% because that is one of their policies, but damn, we still could not understand the hefty price-tag. Well, once we learned that the contrast ratio is 500,000:1, that put things in perspective a bit. The average, Joe six-pack flat-screen in the $750 – $2,000 range has a contrast ratio of about 10,000 – 20,000:1. What does such a disgustingly high contrast ratio mean? That all your brights are brighter and all your dark colors are darker. Basically, you get an excellent viewing experience, that was built on a viewing experience that was already good. So, this TV is amazing, but we still refuse to shell out that kind of dough for a TV. That’s just unreasonable.

But hey, by the way, if 70″ isn’t big enough for you, Samsung also has a 103″ model available at $103,000.00. Every TV should cost $1,000 per viewable inch. Just sayin’, you know, in case you decide to splurge.

Isn’t it funny how pop-culture has become so focused on the interests of kids under the age of 18 because they can convince their parents to buy them stuff? I mean, surely the phenomenon of companies marketing to minors has been going on for years. Thinking back, I realize that stuff was clearly being marketed to me and lots of that marketing was happening through television. It’s probably common knowledge that kids see stuff on TV and then they want it, right? Well, now there’s the Internet, and I think marketing to kids has grown even stronger. I don’t quite know how or why, but the whole High School Musical obsession and the popularity of people like Miley Cyrus are both marketing monsters that seem to keep getting stronger like a virus as it spreads. South Park even dedicated an entire episode to making fun of the former example of marketing aimed at kids from ages 12 to 16 or so. First off, for good measure, here is an old-school commercial for the Nintendo game the Legend of Zelda. This is the type of stuff that I was exposed to as a kid. That’s right, I’m from the Nintendo generation.

So, one of my favorite movies of all time is Donnie Darko. The movie to come closest to that since 2001 when it was released is No Country for Old Men, but the two could be a comparison of apples and oranges. Sure, there have been lots of other great movies released since 2001, but both of those are excellent and you should watch both if you haven’t seen them. One of the best things about Donnie Darko is the fact that it’s set in the 80′s, so everyone is rocking Hobie shirts and using dated expressions (kind of like in the Zelda commercial above). Also, the sheer contempt that Donnie (Gyllenhaal) has for his school and the world around him was just special. When you’re not a mainstream conformist, sometimes the world around you can cause disgust or seem absurd. I think Donnie Darko speaks to the absurdity of the world we live in, even though it was set in the 80′s. So, take this clip for example. I won’t go into much detail about it, but was just reminded of it with the forthcoming release of the movie Notorious (just because of the song being sampled, really). Sparkle Motion is really hilarious and whenever I think of minors I think of the absurdity of Sparkle Motion. No, No, Notorious.

We recently (well, a month and a half ago on November 7th) saw Flying Lotus (Steven Ellison) at a show at the EchoPlex in the Echo Park neighborhood in Los Angeles. Appearances were also made by The Gaslamp Killer, Kode9 and Daedalus (who performed entirely with a Monome: the simple but beautiful midi controller [but basically a box with a bunch of buttons that you can bind to sounds and hook-up to your computer via usb]). We’re really feeling the whole 8-bit vintage vibe coming from Fly Lo. You can’t stop the Nintendo generation.

As mentioned in the Death Cab For Cutie Post, Ben Gibbard formed The Postal Service with Jimmy Tamborello and debuted with their only full-length release on February 18, 2003. Several songs on the album feature guest vocals from Jenny Lewis, the lead vocalist of Rilo Kiley, in addition to vocals from indie rock musician Jen Wood. Coincidentally, Rilo Kiley member Jenny Lewis dated Jake Gyllenhaal and then later Ben Gibbard. She is now the ex-girlfriend of them both. Lewis also starred in the 1989 film The Wizard, which was excellent for any Nintendo fan that’s actually old enough to have played the original NES in its heyday, because the movie placed emphasis on The Power Glove and of course Super Mario Bros. 3. The Mario aspect of the movie was especially exciting because the highly anticipated game had not been released before the film, which meant that the film was North America’s first introduction to the game, which eventually became one of the top-selling video games of all time.

Chris Walla and Dntel produced Give Up. Walla played the guitar and piano on several tracks. The album’s most well-known single was “Such Great Heights“, which has been featured in advertisements for UPS and Kaiser Permanente. The song has also been covered by Amanda Palmer, Ben Folds, Brack Cantrell, and Iron & Wine. The Iron & Wine cover appeared on the soundtrack for the film Garden State, as well as a commercial for M&M’s. Give Up was the Sub Pop label’s most successful release since Nirvana’s debut album Bleach.
