It’s about time somebody used Aretha Franklin’s “I Say A Little Prayer For You,” (which you can hear in track 2 below).

It’s surprising that track two has the most plays on The Jane Doze SoundCloud page for their Girls Talk mixtape. Funny how we went from arguing over whether sampling in music is legitimate to now using entire portions of songs alongside samples for mash-ups. Plus, mash-ups are an accepted form of music! Can’t front. Mash-up truly is music and if you think all it takes is some knob twiddling, easy sequencing of songs, and then pressing the play button at live shows, well we have to disagree with you.

There’s much more to mash-up than meets the eye from the production perspective. If it were so easy, every mash-up artist would be able to sell-out huge venues (e.g. The Hollywood Palladium: 11,200 sq. feet, 4,000 lawful occupancy) the same way Girl Talk does at $25 a ticket (that’s $100,000 on tickets alone per show). The Jane Doze are doing a pretty good job of imitating Girl Talk here, while bringing their own sound to the table. It might not be an original idea, but good imitations can turn into something better sometimes, which seems to be the direction The Jane Doze are heading!
